Montero Ríos, Eugenio

Montero Ríos, Eugenio (āhā`nyō mōntā`rō rē`ōs), 1832–1914, Spanish statesman and jurist. He was professor of canon law at the universities of Oviedo, Santiago, and Madrid. He entered the Cortes (1869), was several times in the cabinet, and helped effect several reforms. Montero Ríos was active in securing the accession of Amadeus Amadeus, 1845–90, king of Spain (1870–73), duke of Aosta, son of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy. After the expulsion (1868) of Queen Isabella II , Juan Prim urged the Cortes to elect Amadeus as king. He accepted the crown reluctantly.
