Montgomery, Edmund Duncan (1835–1911) philosopher; born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After retiring as a physician, he emigrated to the U.S.A. (1870), spending two years at a Georgia colony for resettlement of African-Americans. He then bought a plantation in Texas, where he performed research on protoplasm. His study, Philosophical Problems in the Light of Vital Organization (1907), analyzed mind and body as aspects of one underlying reality.
