In northeast MI, west of Alpena; established as Chenoquet County Apr 1, 1840 from Alpena County; name changed Mar 8, 1843. Name Origin: For Count Raymond de Montmorency (1806-89), a French officer who helped the colonies against England during the Revolutionary War.
