Name Origin: For Madame Montour (c. 1682-1752), an early PA settler. Of French-Canadian and Indian stock, she was captured and adopted at age ten by an Iroquois tribe. She later used her background as an Indian interpreter and greatly influenced Indian affairs in PA and NY. Area (sq mi): 132.30 (land 130.75; water 1.55). Pop per sq mi: 137.90. Pop 2005: 18,032. State rank: 62. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.10%; 1990-2000 2.80%. Pop 2000: 18,236 (White 96.20%; Black or African American 1.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 1.30%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 39.80. Income 2000: per capita $19,302; median household $38,075; Pop below poverty level: 8.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,046-$29,871.
