Montreux

(môNtrö`), resort area (1990 pop. 22,917), on the northeast shore of the Lake of Geneva, Vaud canton, W Switzerland. It is composed of the communes of Le Châtelard, Les Planches, and Veytaux, which were merged in 1962. Montreux is a leading resort on the Lake of Geneva, and lies on a railway line from Geneva and France to Italy. The Montreux Jazz FestivalMontreux Jazz Festival,

Montreux

 

a city in Switzerland, on Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud. Population, 20,400 (1970). Montreux is a tourist center, and a large percentage of its population works in service industries. The Chillon Castle located nearby is now a museum. In 1936 the city was host to a conference on the governing of the Black Sea straits.
