Established: Authorized on September 27, 1890; transferred to National Park Service on June 10, 1933.
Location: In Washington, DC, within 5 miles of the White House.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), bicycle trail, visitor centers (é), nature center, playgrounds, tennis courts, golf course, exercise trails, museum/exhibit.
Activities: Hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, tennis, golf, running, ranger-led programs.
Special Features: One of the largest urban parks in the United States, this wooded preserve contains a wide range of natural, historical, and recreational features in the midst of Washington, D.C. Points of interest include: the Nature Center and Planetarium, the focal point for activities related to the park's natural history; the Old Stone House, the oldest house in Washington; Peirce Mill, a gristmill where corn and wheat were ground into flour using water power from Rock Creek; and the remains of Civil War earthen fortifications, including Fort Stevens, the site of the only battle within the District of Columbia during the Civil War.
