Monchegorsk

a city administered directly through Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on Lake Imandra and linked by a 31-km branch line with the Olen’ia station on the Murmansk-Leningrad railroad line. Population, 46,000 (1970).

Monchegorsk arose in 1937 after copper and nickel ores were discovered there; it grew into an important center for the copper and nickel industry in the Soviet Union. The leading enterprise is the Severonikel’ Combine, which produces nickel, blister copper, cobalt, and sulfuric acid. The food and lumber industries also operate there.
