On the central eastern border of SD, north of Sioux Falls; organized Jan 8, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Brookings and Minnehaha counties. Name Origin: For Col. Gideon Curtis Moody (1832-1906), officer in the Civil War, Dakota Territory legislator, and one of the first two U.S. senators from SD (1889-91)
