moorhen: see rail rail, common name for some members of the large family Rallidae, marsh and tropical forest birds that include the gallinule and the coot, two specialized rails. Rails are cosmopolitan in distribution, except in polar regions.

 or common gallinule

Bird of the migratory gallinule species (Gallinula chloropus, family Rallidae) of Europe, Africa, and eastern North America. Moorhens are blackish and have a scarlet frontal shield (fleshy plate on the forehead). In North America, the moorhen is sometimes called the Florida gallinule.

Visceral organs and bird meats (n = 549) were collected from carcasses of chickens, ducks, quails, water cocks, water hens, swamp hens, crakes, parakeets, and moor hens at local food markets (Tables 1, 2).
AS A boy and teenager I lived in Lichfield Road, Cheylesmore (1937- 52) and recall the pool as a haven for rafting and sailing model boats, though the whole length was encompassed with thick reeds and nesting moor hens and swans.
Ungainly in the extreme, moor hens reportedly undertake nocturnal reconnaissance flights looking for food sources - I've always quite liked the idea of foraging gangs of moorhens flapping about under the stars as the nation sleeps.
