Moore, Gabriel (1785–1845) U.S. representative/senator; born in Stokes County, N.C. A lawyer, congressman (Dem., Ala.; 1821–29), and governor (1829–31), he began the Muscle Shoals Canal and the state university before going to the Senate (1831–35).
