Mopti (môp`tē), city (1993 pop. 75,000), central Mali, a port at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers. The city is built on three islets linked by dikes; one dike, 8 mi (12.9 km) long, connects the islets with the river bank. | gambiae comprises the Mopti (M) cytotype and shows resistance to pyrethroids and DDT; kdr is present at high frequency (11). It is the home of the fabled cities of Mopti and Timbouctou, and it was crossed by ancient inland trade and pilgrimage routes leading from coastal west Africa to the Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Arabian peninsula. Pioneer programmes are being developed in the most severly affected regions of the country-- Mopti, Timbuktu and Gao, where communities are undertaking self-help activities, including establishing seed stores, constructing dykes for water control and introducing intensive gardening to extend the growing season. |
