Mor Van Dashorst, Antonis

    0.01 sec.
Mor Van Dashorst, Antonis

(also Antonio Moro, Sir Anthony More). Born circa 1519 in Utrecht; died 1576 or 1577 in Antwerp. Dutch artist.

Mor was a pupil of Jan van Scorel. Between 1550 and 1560 he traveled in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and England. He became well known throughout Europe as a court portraitist. Mor’s portraits, which are mostly life-size, are characterized by thick brushwork and carefully rendered accessories. The artist’s dispassionate treatment of his subject did not prevent a penetrating revelation of character (Cardinal Granvelle, 1549, Historical Museum of Art, Vienna; Self-portrait, 1558, Uffizi Gallery Florence). Mor had considerable influence on the development of portraiture, particularly in Spain (for example, the portraiture of J. Pantoja de la Cruz).
