Name Origin: Either from personal and family names of early settlers, such as Mora Pineda and Garcia de la Mora, or possibly from the Spanish word meaning 'blackberry' or 'mulberry,' referring to the abundance of fruit locally. Area (sq mi): 1933.48 (land 1931.10; water 2.38). Pop per sq mi: 2.60. Pop 2005: 5,107. State rank: 28. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.40%; 1990-2000 21.50%. Pop 2000: 5,180 (White 16.90%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 81.60%; Asian 0.10%; Other 40.90%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 39.60. Income 2000: per capita $12,340; median household $24,518; Pop below poverty level: 25.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $13,378-$15,867. Unemployment 2004: 11.20%.
