Also found in: Hutchinson 0.34 sec.
Morais, Sabato (1823–97) rabbi; born in Leghorn (now Livorno), Italy. He came to the U.S.A. in 1851 and became rabbi of the Mikveh Israel Congregation of Philadelphia, where he served until his death. An abolitionist, he later concerned himself with raising funds for the Russian Jews who settled in America. In opposition to the rising tide of Reform Judiasm, he helped found the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York in 1886, where he taught until his death.
