Morelos (mōrā`lōs), state (1990 pop. 1,195,059), 1,917 sq mi (4,965 sq km), S Mexico. Cuernavaca Cuernavaca , city (1990 pop. 279,187), capital of Morelos state, S Mexico, in the Cuernavaca Valley. Increasingly a suburb of Mexico City (to the north), Cuernavaca has flour mills and beverage, textile, and cement industries.

 is the capital. Morelos is separated from the Federal District and from Mexico state by the east-west volcanic chain crossing central Mexico. Morelos itself is mountainous, with many broad, semiarid valleys in the south. The climate is cold in the mountains and hot in the valleys. Chiefly agricultural, the state grows sugarcane, rice, cereals, tropical fruits, and vegetables. Industrial progress is prevalent; automobile manufacturing is significant, and mining is being developed. The principal towns are Cuernavaca and Cuautla Cuautla , city (1990 pop. 110,242), Morelos state, S Mexico, in the Cuautla River valley. It is a highway junction and the heart of a sugarcane and rice district; in the late 20th cent. it experienced growth as an outlying suburb of Mexico City.

Morelos

State (pop., 2000: 1,555,296), central Mexico. It covers 1,911 sq mi (4,950 sq km), and its capital is Cuernavaca. Located on the southern slope of the central Mexican plateau, it is one of the country's most flourishing agricultural states, with valleys that produce a variety of agricultural products. It was named for José María Morelos and was the birthplace of Emiliano Zapata, both of whom were heroes of Mexico's wars for independence.

Morelos 

a state in Mexico, situated in the southern part of the Meseta Central. It has an area of 4,900 sq km and a population of 616,000 (1970). The administrative center is Cuernavaca. Rice and sugarcane are the principal crops, and fruit is grown for the markets in Mexico City. The chief industries are food processing (primarily sugar) and textiles, and artistic crafts are important. Morelos also has a thriving tourist trade.

Pre-Maradona, we kicked off our Mexican experience in the easy going, bohemian resort of Puerto Morelos, 15 minutes south of Cancun airport, relaxing on pristine white sandy beaches and indulging in spa treatments before transferring to Cancun itself for the latter part of our stay.
