Morgan City, city (1990 pop. 14,531), St. Mary parish, S La., a fishing port on the Atchafalaya River (connected to the Intracoastal Waterway Intracoastal Waterway, c.3,000 mi (4,827 km) long, partly natural, partly artificial, providing sheltered passage for commercial and leisure boats along the U.S. Atlantic coast from Boston, Mass. to Key West, S Fla.

); inc. 1860 as Brasher, renamed 1876. The city is headquarters for offshore petroleum drilling and has oil and gas wells. Also in Morgan City are shipyards, a large shrimp fleet, an oyster industry, and alligator farms. Barges, propeller shafts, crewboats, and yachts are manufactured. The Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival is held in the city.

Hurricane alerts were in effect over a 400-mile stretch of coastline from south of Corpus Christi to Morgan City, Louisiana.
Robert Moore, pastor of Morgan City Baptist Church, officiated in the double-ring ceremony.
A hurricane warning was in effect for the north-central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, Louisiana, to the AlabamaFlorida line, meaning hurricane conditions were expected within 24 hours, the hurricane centre said.
