Morgenthau, Hans J. (Joachim) (1904–80) political scientist; born in Coburg, Germany. He left Germany in 1932 and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1937. He taught at several universities including the University of Chicago, where he was director of the Center for the Study of American Foreign and Military Policy (1944–61). He emphasized a "realistic approach" to foreign policy, one in which national interests preside over global concerns. He was a fierce critic of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.
