Morioka

Morioka (mōrē`ôkä), city (1990 pop. 235,434), capital of Iwate prefecture, N Honshu, Japan, on the Kitakami River. An industrial and commercial center, it is noted for the production of ironware. Iwate Univ. and a 12th-century castle are in Morioka.

a city in Japan, located in the northern part of Honshu Island, on the Kitakami River; capital of Iwate Prefecture. Population 196,000 (1973).

Morioka is a railroad junction. There are cement, textile (knit-wear and nylon apparel), and machine-building industrial enterprises. Computers, mining equipment, and paper goods are also made in Morioka. Household utensils and traditional cast-iron articles, or nambu tetsubin, are handmade in the city.

The University of Iwate, established in 1949, and a medical institute set up in 1952 are located in Morioka. The city is also a center for horse breeding. Iron ore is mined in the vicinity.

JT said it will close plants in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, at the end of March 2010, and one in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the end of March 2011.
Koji Yoshida, an official for Morioka Fire Department in nearby Aomori, said the tremor was strong, but nothing fell off shelves.
Besides 2nd prize in the opera competition and 3rd prize in the operetta competition, Noah also won one of four prizes offered by Teatro alla Scala Milan, one of four offered by Stadttheater Klagenfurt and the Morioka Prize Japan.
