Morotai (môrōtī`), island (c.695 sq mi/1,800 sq km), E Indonesia, one of the Moluccas. Heavily wooded, it produces timber and resin.
Morotai an island in the Moluccas, north of Halmahera; part of Indonesia. Area, about 1,800 sq km. The landscape is dominated by hills and greatly dissected low mountains composed of volcanic rock that reach heights of 1,250 m. There are coral reefs along the southwestern coast. The climate is subequatorial, and there is about 2,700 mm of precipitation annually. There are tropical rain forests. The island’s population is concentrated along the coast.
