In east-central TX panhandle, northeast of Lubbock; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For Junius William Mottley (1812-36), signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836) who was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. Clerical spelling error was allowed to stand.
