Mound Key Archeological State Park

Location: In Estero Bay, several miles by boat from Koreshan State Historic Site or Lovers Key State Park. Accessible by boat only.
Facilities: Under development. A trail that has interpretive displays spans the width of the island. Park has no restroom facilities.
Activities: Boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing.
Special Features: Mound Key is believed to have been the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indians when the Spaniards first attempted to colonize Southwest Florida in the 1500s. Rising more than 30 feet above the waters of Estero Bay, the shell mounds and ridges on the island were probably created by prehistoric Native Americans from seashells, fish bones, and pottery.
