Mounds State Park Location: Off I-69, east of Anderson. Facilities: 75 campsites with electric hookups, flush toilets, and showers, primitive youth tent camping area, camp store, hiking trails (6 miles), picnic areas with playgrounds and playfields, 2 shelters, recreation building (rental), swimming pool, bathhouse, concession, restrooms, visitor center with exhibits and wildlife viewing. Activities: Camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, interpretive programs. Special Features: Park features 10 unique earthworks built by a group of prehistoric Indians known as the Adena-Hopewell people. The largest earthwork, "The Great Mound," is believed to have been constructed around 160 B.C. Archeological surveys indicate it was used as a gathering place for religious ceremonies.
