Calvary

Calvary (kăl`vərē) [Lat.,=a skull] or Golgotha (gŏl`gəthə) [Heb.,=a skull], in the Gospels, place where Jesus was crucified, outside what was then the wall of Jerusalem. Its location is not certainly known. The traditional identification of the site of Calvary was made by St. Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, when she found (c.326) what was believed to be a relic of the actual cross on which Jesus was crucified. The spot is within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher Holy Sepulcher , church in Jerusalem, officially the Church of the Resurrection. It is in the east central part of the Christian quarter, on the supposed site of Jesus' tomb. Steps connect it with chapels of St. Helena and of the Finding of the True Cross (see St.

. In 1885 General Charles G. Gordon proposed a site near the Damascus Gate, first suggested in 1842. This is called the Garden Tomb or Gordon's Calvary.

Hill in Jerusalem. The purported site of Jesus' Crucifixion, the hill was outside the Old City walls of Jerusalem and near the sepulchre where Jesus was said to have been afterward interred. Its exact location is uncertain, but most scholars prefer either the spot now covered by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or a hillock called Gordon's Calvary north of the Damascus Gate.

Inurnment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland.
During April and May, people from all age groups and religions carry a wooden cross to share the pain and hardships that Jesus went through the way to crusification at Mount Calvary.
Saturday along with a memorial service in the chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1900 Edith Blvd.
