MarkhamCity (pop., 1991: 154,000), southeastern Ontario. It is situated on the Rouge River, northeast of Toronto. Settled in 1794, the town was named for William Markham, archbishop of York. It annexed the nearby township of Markham in 1971. Markham Mount. a mountain in Antarctica, in Victoria Land. Height: 4350 m (14 272 ft.) Markham a mountain in East Antarctica, in the Transantarctic Mountains, south of the Nimrod glacier. It consists of three peaks, the highest of which has an elevation of 4,351 m. It was discovered in 1902 by the British antarctic expedition led by R. F. Scott and was named by him in honor of C. Markham, the president of the Royal Geographical Society.
