Nyiragongo (nyē'rägông`gō), active volcano (c.11,400 ft/3,475 m) of the Virunga range in E Congo near the Rwanda border, NE of Lake Kivu Kivu, lake, 1,042 sq mi (2,699 sq km), 55 mi (89 km) long, on the Congo-Rwanda border, E central Africa; highest lake in Africa (4,788 ft/1,459 m). It is drained by the Ruzizi River, which flows S into Lake Tanganyika.

There are several old craters, easily accessible and noted for their picturesque scenery and flora. Local legends associate the volcano with the place of expiation of guilty souls. Nyiragongo an active volcano in the Virunga group in Zaïre, north of Lake Kivu. Height, 3,470 m. Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano in the form of a regular truncated cone with a well-like crater about 1 km in diameter, with a molten lava pool at the bottom.
