Nyiragongo (nyē'rägông`gō), active volcano (c.11,400 ft/3,475 m) of the Virunga range in E Congo near the Rwanda border, NE of Lake Kivu Kivu, lake, 1,042 sq mi (2,699 sq km), 55 mi (89 km) long, on the Congo-Rwanda border, E central Africa; highest lake in Africa (4,788 ft/1,459 m). It is drained by the Ruzizi River, which flows S into Lake Tanganyika.

 and 12 mi (19 km) N of Goma, in southern part of Virunga National Park. It erupted in 1948, 1977, and 2002. There are several old craters, easily accessible and noted for their picturesque scenery and flora. Local legends associate the volcano with the place of expiation of guilty souls.
Nyiragongo 

an active volcano in the Virunga group in Zaïre, north of Lake Kivu. Height, 3,470 m. Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano in the form of a regular truncated cone with a well-like crater about 1 km in diameter, with a molten lava pool at the bottom. There are two older side craters on the northern and southern slopes. The volcano has been active since 1927; its activity is limited to the main crater.

2002: Mount Nyiragongo erupts in Congo destroying 14 villages.
Most recently, in January 2002, Goma attracted world attention again when Mount Nyiragongo volcano, situated six miles north-east of Goma and closest to the former Mugunga refugee camp, erupted.
WHEN Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the Congo in January this year, molten lava plunged down the hillside and poured into the nearby Lake Kivu.
