Tarawera Mountain (tä'räwâr`ə), volcanic peak, 3,646 ft (1,111 m) high, on the North Island, New Zealand, in Rotorua Rotorua , city (1996 pop. 52,953), central North Island, New Zealand. It is a popular tourist area with nearby lakes and hot springs. The area is also important for timber and agriculture.

During the late nineteenth century, the area around Mount Tarawera was known for its high-spouting geysers and hot springs.
Multi-coloured silica terraces, geysers, mud pools, boiling lakes and the massive crater of Mount Tarawera, which erupted Mount Ruapehu, feature in Tongariro National Park.
