Mount Washington State Park

Mount Washington State Park

Location: Near US 302, north of Crawford Notch and Route 16 at Pinkham Notch. Surrounded by White Mountain National Forest (see separate entry in national forests chapter).
Facilities: Visitor center, cafeteria, restrooms, gift shop, observatory, museum, historic site, hiking trails, scenic auto road, cog railway.
Activities: Hiking.
Special Features: Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the northeast (6,288 feet), experiences some of the worst weather in the world and is the site of the highest land wind speed ever recorded (231 mph). Wind exceeds hurricane force (75 mph) more than 100 days a year. Park includes the restored Tip Top House and the Mount Washington Observatory Museum. A segment of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the park (see separate entry in national trails section). Park can be reached by auto road, cog railway, or hiking trails.
