In north-central ND, west of Minot; organized as Mountraille County Jan 4, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Ward County. Eliminated in 1891; reestablished with present spelling Jan 25, 1909. Name Origin: For "Savage" Joseph Mountraille, prominent voyageur who carried the mail.

Area (sq mi): 1941.08 (land 1823.93; water 117.15). Pop per sq mi: 3.60.
Pop 2005: 6,513. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.80%; 1990-2000 -5.60%. Pop 2000: 6,631 (White 65.70%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.30%; Asian 0.20%; Other 33.70%). Foreign born: 1.20%. Median age: 39.60.
Income 2000: per capita $13,422; median household $27,098; Pop below poverty level: 19.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,356-$25,624.
Unemployment 2004: 5.30%. Change from 2000: 0.60%. Median travel time to work: 16.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.70%.
