    0.01 sec.
Mouzinho de Albuquerque, Joaquim (zhwäkēm` mōzē`nyō thĭ äl'bəkĕr`kə), 1855–1902, Portuguese military commander and administrator in Mozambique. As governor of the district of Gaza, he played a large part in suppressing the rebellion of the native tribes of S Mozambique that broke out in 1895. By a daring coup he captured Gungunhana, the native leader, and established order, strengthening Portugal's hold on Mozambique. He was appointed royal commissioner but, lacking administrative ability, resigned in 1898. He returned to Lisbon and later committed suicide.
