Mowatt, Anna Cora

Mowatt, Anna Cora (b. Ogden) (1819–70) actress, playwright; born in Bordeaux, France. Daughter of a well-to-do American merchant, she came to the U.S.A. at age seven. She started out as a playwright, and her social satire, Fashion, was a success in 1845. Despite earlier ill health, she then became an actress, debuting as Pauline in The Lady of Lyons. She later formed her own company, which traveled to London.
