Moxham, Arthur J.

Moxham, Arthur J. (James) (1854–1931) steel manufacturer; born at Neath, Wales. He came to Louisville, Ky., in 1869 and worked in an iron foundry until 1878. In Alabama, he organized the Birmingham Rolling-Mill Company, which he ran until 1883 when he moved to Johnstown, Pa., to build iron girder rails with their inventor, Tom L. Johnson. Moxham directed the town's rebuilding effort after the infamous flood of 1889. The Johnson Company later moved to Ohio and became the Lorain Steel Company, merging in 1899 to form the Illinois Steel Company (which in 1901 became part of U.S. Steel). He also helped found the Dominion Iron & Steel Company in Nova Scotia (1901), was an executive at E. I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company (1902–14), and formed the Aetna Explosives Company (1914–17).
