Muffle

a closed chamber in which material to be heated in a furnace is placed in order to prevent contact with products of combustion of fuel. Heat is transmitted to the material being heated through the wall of the muffle, which is made of molded firebrick or heat-resistant steel. In a number of cases, muffles are filled with a special protective gas. Compartment furnaces equipped with a muffle are frequently called muffle furnaces.
