Born Oct. 21, 1924, in Steyregg, Styria. A figure in the Austrian and international workers’ movements.

Muhri, the son of a miner, began work at age 15. He worked as a messenger, a construction worker, and a bookkeeper. During the fascist German occupation of Austria he was active in an underground organization of the Communist Youth League operating in Graz. In 1945 he became a member of the Communist Party of Austria (CPA). After the liberation of Austria in 1945 and the resumption of the CPA’s legal activities, Muhri was elected secretary of the district party committee in Deutsch-landsberg. From 1946 to 1948 he worked in the Central Party School of the CPA and in a party school in Lower Austria. From 1949 to 1959 he was secretary of the CPA district committee in Mödling and then in Gänserndorf.

From 1959 to 1961, Muhri was secretary of the CPA’s Styrian organization. From 1954 to 1961 he was a candidate member of the CPA Central Committee; in 1961 he became a member both of the Central Committee and its Politburo. In May 1965 he became chairman of the CPA, and in June 1970 a member of the Secretariat of the CPA Central Committee. Muhri is the author of a number of works on questions of the Austrian and international Communist movements.
