Muir Woods National Monument

National woodland, northern California, U.S. A virgin stand of coastal redwoods, it covers an area of 554 acres (224 hectares) near the Pacific coast, northwest of San Francisco. Some of the trees are more than 300 ft (90 m) high, 15 ft (5 m) in diameter, and 2,000 years old. The park, established in 1908, was named in honour of the naturalist John Muir.

Established: Proclaimed on January 9, 1908.
Location: 12 miles north of California's Golden Gate Bridge, accessible via US 101 and CA 1.
Facilities: Rest rooms (é), restaurant/snacks, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Hiking, wildlife viewing.
Special Features: The virgin stand of coastal redwoods was purchased by Congressman William Kent and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent in 1905. The land was subsequently donated to the federal government and declared a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, in honor of John Muir, writer and conservationist.
