Muir Woods National Monument

National woodland, northern California, U.S. A virgin stand of coastal redwoods, it covers an area of 554 acres (224 hectares) near the Pacific coast, northwest of San Francisco. Some of the trees are more than 300 ft (90 m) high, 15 ft (5 m) in diameter, and 2,000 years old. The park, established in 1908, was named in honour of the naturalist John Muir.

Joyce Kilmer might see it somewhat differently, but a giant fallen redwood now on the floor of Muir Woods National Monument in California is just as lovely as an erect tree.
This year the BPM staff helped facilitate the American Heart Association's HeartWalk in downtown San Francisco; did habitat restoration and clean-up at the Taylor Foundation's Camp Arroyo in Livermore and the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga; helped with maintenance and gardening at Angel Island's former hospital and museum, and did trail clearing and landscaping at Muir Woods.
The Department of Conservation is committed to honoring Muir's name-- not only through helping fund conservation projects at living landmarks like the John Muir National Historic Site and Muir Woods National Monument-- but by incorporating Muir's philosophies into modern environmental challenges and creating solutions that balance environmental protection with economic prosperity.
