Mukha

the nickname given to several successive leaders of a peasant uprising against the Moldavian boyars and Polish and Ukrainian nobility in 1490–92. The uprising engulfed northern Moldavia (Pokut’e) and Halich Land and Podolia in the Western Ukraine. In 1490, leading a force of 9,000 to 10,000 peasants, both Moldavians and Ukrainians, Mukha reached Halich and then advanced on L’vov, but was defeated at Rohatin. Andrei Borulia, who according to some sources was the original Mukha, became head of the uprising in 1491. Reaching Halich, the rebels were soon beaten, and their leader was captured and executed in 1491. In 1492 the antifeudal movement was headed by a man who also called himself Mukha.
