Müller, Friedrich
Born Mar. 5, 1834, in Jemniky; died May 27, 1898, in Vienna. Austrian linguist and ethnologist. Professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Vienna (from 1866). Müller sought to relate the classification of languages according to families and types to the classification of peoples according to racial groups. One of Müller’s chief works, Grundriss der Sprachwissenschaft (Outline of Linguistics), presents brief information about the grammatical structure of many languages of the world.
