On central northern border of OR; organized Dec 22, 1854 (prior to statehood) from Clackamas and Washington counties. The smallest county in OR by size and largest by population. Name Origin: For the Multnomah Indian village on Sauvie Island; Lewis and Clark applied the name to all local Indians. From nemathlonamaq, probably meaning 'downriver.'

Area (sq mi): 465.65 (land 435.23; water 30.42). Pop per sq mi: 1546.10.
Pop 2005: 672,906. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.90%; 1990-2000 13.10%. Pop 2000: 660,486 (White 76.50%; Black or African American 5.70%; Hispanic or Latino 7.50%; Asian 5.70%; Other 9.50%). Foreign born: 12.70%. Median age: 34.90.
Income 2000: per capita $22,606; median household $41,278; Pop below poverty level: 12.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $32,328-$34,017.
Unemployment 2004: 7.60%. Change from 2000: 1.30%. Median travel time to work: 23.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.60%.

    Byline: Jack Moran The Register-Guard A Multnomah County grand jury on Tuesday indicted a woman on eight counts of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder, alleging that she forced her two children off a bridge over the Willamette River.
