Mundelein, George (William) (1872–1939) Catholic prelate; born in New York City. After studies in the U.S.A. and in Rome, where he was ordained (1895), he held administrative posts in the diocese of Brooklyn, becoming an auxiliary bishop (1909). In 1915 he was appointed archbishop of Chicago, becoming a cardinal in 1924. He was a vigorous advocate of Catholic interests and had close ties to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
