Murashko, Nikolai Ivanovich
Born May 8 (20), 1844, in Glukhov; died Sept. 9 (22), 1909, in Kiev. Ukrainian painter. Murashko studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1863 to 1868. Between 1875 and 1901, he directed the Kiev School of Drawing, which he had founded. He urged his students to follow the artistic principles of the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers,” a progressive art movement). Murashko’s landscapes, such as Above the Dnieper (1880’s-1890’s; Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev), are full of lyricism and resemble the art of the peredvizhniki.
