Muratov, Mikhail Vladimirovich 

Born Feb. 29 (Mar. 13), 1908, in Moscow. Soviet geologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1962).

Muratov graduated from Moscow University in 1930. He has served as head of the subdepartment of historical and regional geology of the Moscow Geological Research Institute (since 1959), senior scientific worker of the Geology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1957), and chairman of the Interdepartmental Tectonics Committee of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1965). His principal works deal with theoretical tectonics and, in particular, the tectonic structure of the world’s folded zones.

Muratov is one of the compilers and editors of tectonic and geological maps of the USSR, Europe, and the world. In 1951 and 1969 he won the State Prize of the USSR for his The Tectonics and Developmental History of the Alpine Geosynclinal Area of the Southern Part of the European USSR and Adjacent Countries (1949) and for participating in compiling The Tectonic Map of Eurasia (scale of 1:5,000,000) and the monograph Tectonics of Eurasia (1966). Muratov has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
