Muroma

Muroma 

a tribe related to the Mordva that lived along the banks of the Oka River in present-day Murom Raion, Vladimir Oblast. The Muroma language was related to the Finno-Ugric group. The culture of the Muroma is known from archaeological remains of fortified towns from the first millennium B.C. to the early part of the first millennium A.D., and from burial grounds and settlements of the first millennium A.D. The occupations of the Muroma were livestock breeding, farming, fur trapping, fishing, gathering of wild honey, iron metallurgy, and copper-casting anʘ jewelry handicrafts. Trade, mainly with the European part of the Ural region, played an important role. In the tenth and 11th centuries, the Muroma paid tribute to Rus’; in the 12th century they were completely russianized.
