Murphy, Gardner

Murphy, Gardner (1895–1979) social psychologist; born in Chillicothe, Ohio. Educated at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia Universities, he taught at Columbia (1921–40) and married psychologist Lois Barclay (1926). After teaching at City College of New York (1940–52), he served as director of research at the Menninger Clinic and Foundation for 15 years. His best-known work is Personality: A Biosocial Approach to Origins and Structures (1947).
