Murray, John Courtney (1904–67) Catholic theologian; born in New York City. A Jesuit priest with a doctorate in theology from Gregorian University in Rome (1937), he taught at a Jesuit seminary in Maryland, was religion editor of the Jesuit magazine America, and edited the journal Theological Studies. An advocate of ecumenism and freedom for all religions, he was silenced for a time by church conservatives but he strongly influenced the stand on religious liberty adopted at the Second Vatican Council.
