Murray, Lord George, 1694–1760, Scottish general. He took part in the risings of the Jacobites Jacobites (jăk`əbīts') ..... Click the link for more information. in 1715, 1719, and 1745. Although he foresaw the hopelessness of the 1745 uprising, he was one of Charles Edward Stuart's ablest commanders in the rebellion, serving him in the victory of Prestonpans and in the retreat from the invasion of England. He opposed the strategy that led to the defeat at Culloden Moor (1746). After the battle, in which he commanded the right wing, he fled to Holland. BibliographySee biography by K. Tomasson (1958).
