Murten (mr`tən), Fr. Morat, town, Fribourg canton, W Switzerland, on the Lake of Murten. It is known chiefly as the scene of the defeat (1476) of Charles the Bold of Burgundy by the Swiss. Founded by the dukes of Zähringen in the 12th cent., Murten has preserved much of its historic architecture. It has a 13th-century castle, town walls (14th–15th cent.), and a 15th-century French Gothic church.
