On the west-central coast of MI, bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established Jan 7, 1859 from Newaygo County. Name Origin: For the Muskegon River, from an Ojibway word meaning 'marshy river.'

Area (sq mi): 1459.30 (land 509.12; water 950.18). Pop per sq mi: 344.80.
Pop 2005: 175,554. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.10%; 1990-2000 7.10%. Pop 2000: 170,200 (White 79.50%; Black or African American 14.20%; Hispanic or Latino 3.50%; Asian 0.40%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 1.90%. Median age: 35.50.
Income 2000: per capita $17,967; median household $38,008; Pop below poverty level: 11.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,122-$24,468.
Unemployment 2004: 7.90%. Change from 2000: 1.00%. Median travel time to work: 20.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 25.10%.
