In central OH, east of Columbus; organized Mar 1, 1804 from Washington and Fairfield counties. Name Origin: For the Muskingum River, which flows through it; from Algonquian but the meaning is uncertain, possibly 'by the river.'

Area (sq mi): 672.59 (land 664.63; water 7.97). Pop per sq mi: 128.80.
Pop 2005: 85,579. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.20%; 1990-2000 3.10%. Pop 2000: 84,585 (White 93.50%; Black or African American 4.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.80%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 36.50.
Income 2000: per capita $17,533; median household $35,185; Pop below poverty level: 12.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,350-$24,821.
Unemployment 2004: 8.20%. Change from 2000: 2.30%. Median travel time to work: 24.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 20.90%.
