Mustafaev, Rustam Mamed Ogly

Born Feb. 12 (25), 1910, in Baku; died there July 19, 1940. Soviet set designer, one of the founders of stage design in Azerbaijan.

Mustafaev graduated from the Azerbaijan Higher School of Art in 1926. His early work was influenced by constructivism (the staging of Dzhabarly’s The Fire Bride, 1933, Azerbaijan Art Theater). Beginning in 1935, Mustafaev designed sets in a more realistic style. He did the sets for Z. Gadzhibekov’s opera Ashig Garib (1939, Azerbaijan Theater of Opera and Ballet) and U. Gadzhibekov’s musical comedy Arshin mal alan (1940; staged 1956, Theater of Musical Comedy). Mustafaev was awarded the Medal of Honor.
