Muti, Riccardo (rēk-kär`dō m`tē), 1941–, Italian conductor. Principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale (1969–81) in Florence and of the Philharmonia Orchestra (1973–82) in London, he became (1977) principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and succeeded (1980) Eugene Ormandy Ormandy, Eugene , 1899–1985, American conductor, b. Budapest. At the age of five Ormandy entered the Budapest Conservatory, where he studied the violin. Graduating in 1914, he became a member of the faculty.

 as its musical director, a position he held until 1992. He served as music director of La Scala in Milan from 1986 until 2005.
